Schools and Education
The Jersey City Public School District is the state's 2nd largest. There are 31 elementary, five high schools and one special needs school, all in total serving about 28,000 students.
Jersey City also is home to a private, post-secondary skills-training facilities like the Chubb Institute that provides computer training; St. Peter's Preparatory High School is a private high school founded in 1872 by the Society of Jesus. With an average enrollment of just under 1,000, the school is an college prep school for boys; Hudson Catholic Regional High School, a regional high school established in 1964 for boys, serves about 550.
Other private high schools in Jersey City include the Academy of St. Aloysius, Kenmare High School for Women, St. Anthony High School, Saint Aloysius High School, Saint Dominic Academy and St. Mary High School.
Colleges in the area include Hudson County Community College, a two-year school; New Jersey City University; St. Peter's College, a liberal arts college in the Jesuit tradition; Columbia University; New Jersey Institute of Technology; New York University; Rutgers University – Newark; Seton Hall University; and Stevens Institute of Technology.

As of the 2000 census, there were 240,055 people living here.
The median income of its households is $37,862, and the median income of its families is $41,639. Men had a median income of $35,119 versus $30,494 for women.
